Tims 99 TA Turbo Build

OK so since Tim is a slacker I'm posting up the build. Just like My build thread Ill give ya a little short history on the car. The car before tear down was a 99 WS6 Trans AM with a Formula front bumper. The drive line consisted of a 10 over 346 with mildly ported LPE LS6 heads, forged Mahle pistons, stock knife edged crank and Crower rods with ARP hardware. The Trans WAS a build TH350 but we destroyed the case after the 2nd or 3rd full 1/4 mile pass spraying a 200 shot of nitrous. The rear is your standard issue 9” with 3.90 gears and a spool, the driveshaft is a custom 3” steel made by right here in Nashville. The car retains pretty much the entire interior with the exception of the center console and seats. Here’s pics of that carnage and what the car looked like before the tear down.

Now for the goals and how we intend to reach them! At the start of the collaborating and planning we had one goal and that was to run 9.50 all day every day no matter the weather AND still be able to cruise down to the local hot spot and have the hot bitches drooling all over the car, err umm the last part is partially true it had to be able to drive to the local cruisin’s, I don’t know where the hot bitches part came from… So with that goal in mind the only real reliable way to make that happen with the 346 short block and still be badass was to go turbo.

From the start we knew that the T6 framed Turbo was what we wanted and would meet all of our goals plus anything we threw at it in the future. We then spent the last 6-8 months sourcing parts, or should I say STEALING them from people! The friggin deals Tim gets are awesome, I don’t know how he does it but I’m seriously thinking about just having him source all the parts for any of my future builds. Ok back on topic, the turbo we chose was the Borg Warner/Bullseye S480 with a 1.32 A/R with the race cover. Here’s a couple pics of it sitting next to my little 78mm T4 Frame.

After the turbo was bought we picked up a Stage 2 Nasty Nate fuel system capable of supporting around 2000hp (crank) here a link http://www.nastyperformance.com/FuelSystems.html
Some other parts that got picked up include the new griffin radiator, another Kirkey for the passenger, A2W intercooler, Water/Ice tank and pump, aluminum intercooler piping with V-bands, KY Turbo Hot side, New Edelbrock Intake, Intake Elbow, fuel rails, JGS 50mm BOV, JGS 50mm Waste gate, Fast XFi standalone with wiring harness. Im sure I missed something but as you can see the parts really started piling up. Heres a couple pics of our parts pile.

Now that the pile or parts was looking good and race season was over, we needed to get the car ready! Time to tear down! The initial tear down took about a day with a great group of guys. Heres some pics of the raping.

We had originally intended to just fab up the hot side using the truck manifolds but a smoking deal came along for a hot side setup from Josh at KY Turbo that we just couldn’t justify fabricating a new setup. Here’s some pics of the mock up with the SWEET intake (we are powder coating the base black to match the elbow)

Now that the car is stripped, Its time to make room for the small animal destroyer. The front radiator cross brace needs to be cut out and plated with a new bar welded in place. This is as far as we got on this last night.

While Tim was cutting and welding up the front radiator support I got started on cutting the cowl back. Now just about every picture and car I’ve seen, the cowl cut really doesn’t look factory. It basically looks like someone just hacked it off and called it a day. We wanted this to look as factory as possible which meant a little metal work and some smoothing would be needed but in the end it should look damn close to factory. Here’s the start and some progress pics. Ill post more tomorrow.

Heres the initial cut, the goal is to separate the top and bottom piece of the cowl and re-use the bottom and roll it up and weld it back to the top.. This means the inital cut is to two lips behind the spot welds.

Once we separated the two halfs we made sure we left plenty of meat on the bottom piece since that’s what we want to push up and roll into the new cut back lip. The only thing keeping the bottom piece from smoothly rolling up is some cross bracing. We cut the bracing supports and drilled out the spot welds.

Heres the initial cut with the cross bracing in the center cut out.

Nothing wrong with using a floor jack in the engine bay to “persuade” the metal! We started rolling and pushing the bottom strip up into the top and tach welding it into place.

Here the passenger side is staring to take shape. I cut off some of the excess but its FAR from being done. The whole section needs to be cut back more and seam welded, then ground smooth.

Looking good.. you going with an intercooler inside the car?
Experience with mine is all the exhaust piping will corrode out with the heat wrap on it. After a year all of mine was sagging, rusted, and pretty poor shape under the heat wrap. I wouldn't use it unless you really need it to protect some areas. The manifolds will probably be alright.

That sucks to hear. I was planning on heat-wrapping all of it....Did yours ever get wet? I have heard of that happening when the stuf gets wet and never dries, but not other than that.

1997 Z28: 418 ci, solid roller cam, WCCH L92's, maybe some spray, etc. you get the general idea. Don't worry... it's never going to run again.
2003 3500 QCSB Cummins: 5" straight exhaust, South Bend Clutch, Predator Diable/Puck stacked tune, boost fooler, leveling kit, 35" tires.
